Dynamometer Controller

The INERTIA Dynamometer Controller is a real-time embedded PXI controller that provides deterministic and robust real-time control. The controller performs complete test cell and test control with PIDF control and real-time alarm monitoring.

An INERTIA system can control diesel and gasoline engines, eddy current absorbers, air brakes, water brakes, AC and DC motors as well as most cell facilities for maintaining air, oil, and water temperatures.

The INERTIA Dynamometer Control software provides:

  • Primary PIDF control of RPM(s), torque(s), and throttle(s)
  • Secondary PIDF control of cooling loops, e.g. engine water cooling, oil cooling, etc.
  • Programmatically controlled data logging of any channel or variable
  • Control, data acquisition, and data logging rates from 100 Hz to >2 kHz
  • User definable alarms and event manager
  • Completely customizable test profiles featuring ramps, dwells, conditional branches, etc.
  • Automatic test start, restart, and stop tracking along with user customizable screens and data fields for each event
  • Maintenance tracker for automatically stopping a test or prompting an operator
  • Customizable user interface with the use of LabVIEW
  • 16-bit analog input and output (12-bit channels available)
  • I/O channel support from a few channels to hundreds including RPM, torque, voltages, and temperatures

A typical INERTIA engine dynamometer control system is shown below. This system
provides:

  • Engine throttle voltage PIDF control
  • Water-cooled, eddy current absorber PIDF control either controlling load or engine rpm
  • Engine water cooling system PIDF control
  • Engine oil cooling system PIDF control
  • Provides complete test profile control over all setpoints, alarms, logging and other control parameters.

The system's hardware features a single chassis holding National Instruments PXI and SCXI hardware. The analog inputs and outputs feature high precision 16-bit converters and software selectable filtering.

  • 32 channels of digital inputs from 5 VDC to 250 VAC
  • 8 frequency inputs
  • 16 digital outputs capable of switching up to 5A at 30 VDC or 120 VAC
  • 8 dedicated thermocouple inputs with open thermocouple detections
  • 32 general purpose inputs for inputs ranging from thermocouples to 10 VDC
  • 4 high precision analog outputs

Additional inputs and outputs are easily added by simply purchasing another SCXI or PXI card and installing it into the system. For more information on INERTIA engine dynamometer control packages and customization, please contact our office.
